Texts

(1) 1Q: Luke 10:16 = Matt 10:40

/16/ "Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me."

=Matt 10:40
/40/ "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.

(2) Mark 9:36-37 = Matt 18:2,5 = Luke 9:47-48a

/36/ Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, /37/ "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me."

=Matt 18:2,5
/2/ He called a child, whom he put among them, /3/ and said, "Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. /4/ Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. /5/ Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.

=Luke 9:47-48a
/47/ But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, /48/ and said to them, "Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me;

(3) Did 11:4-5

/11:4/ Let every apostle who comes to you be received as the Lord.
/5/ He shall stay <only> one day, or, if need be another [day] too.
If he stays three days, he is a false prophet.
/6/ When the apostle leaves, let him receive nothing
but [enough] bread [to see him through] until he finds lodging.
If he asks for money, he is a false prophet. [Hermeneia]

(4) John

(4a) John 5:23
/23/ so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father. Anyone who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him.

(4b) John 12:44-50
/44/ Then Jesus cried aloud: "Whoever believes in me believes not in me but in him who sent me. /45/ And whoever sees me sees him who sent me. /46/ I have come as light into the world, so that everyone who believes in me should not remain in the darkness. /47/ I do not judge anyone who hears my words and does not keep them, for I came not to judge the world, but to save the world. /48/ The one who rejects me and does not receive my word has a judge; on the last day the word that I have spoken will serve as judge, /49/ for I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment about what to say and what to speak. /50/ And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I speak, therefore, I speak just as the Father has told me."

(4c) John 13:20
/20/ Very truly, I tell you, whoever receives one whom I send receives me; and whoever receives me receives him who sent me."

(5) IgnEph 6:1

Now the more any one sees the bishop keeping silence, the more ought he to revere him. For we ought to receive every one whom the Master of the house sends to be over His household, as we would do Him that sent him. It is manifest, therefore, that we should look upon the bishop even as we would upon the Lord Himself. [ANF]

Gerd Luedemann

On Luke 10:16

Jesus did not utter the saying in its present wording, because the transference of the authority of Jesus to the disciples presupposes the situation of the community (cf. on Matt. 18.5). [Jesus, 329]

On Mark 9:35b,37

Mark already found both sayings in their secondary version addressed to the community ... As the following sayings are also addressed quite specifically to community problems, the question alrrady arises at this point whether a short community catechism has been worked into 9.33-50. ... In both sayings the spirit of Jesus is sometimes rediscovered. ... But such an analysis must remain unsatisfactory. [Jesus, 64]

John P. Meier

Meier does not consider any of these versions of the saying in either of the first two volumes [Marginal Jew I, II].
